Understanding Empowerment Endowments

Autores/Participantes : Colin Anthony, Heidi Dietzsch, Nonhlanhla Kunene, Orin Tambo

This report is based on a six-month research exercise into the charitable and community components of the 100 largest Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) companies’ empowerment deals implemented since 2002, when community schemes started to be included in black economic empowerment (BEE) deals. It follows an earlier research report, “The Empowerment Endowment” (2017), which undertook research into the scale of BEE foundations. The sources for this research include the published documents of the companies and the foundations, but also extensive interviews and other engagements with various company and foundation executives to obtain information.
