Mapping Power in Philanthropy: Dynamics and Practices Inside Human Rights Philanthropy
This report examines how “Shifting the Power” commitments are being adopted (or reinforced) within human rights philanthropy. Based on 25 interviews across 17 organizations, it highlights four core areas: trust-based philanthropy, flexible funding, localization, and leadership diversification. The findings reveal tensions between structural changes and practices that perpetuate power asymmetries. Crises emerge as key moments for innovation and redistribution, but also expose the limits of institutional commitments. The study calls for collective strategies to monitor practices, strengthen alliances, and increase transparency in the sector.
