The contributions in this edition of The PhiLanthropic Year present practices and processes that are becoming part of an emerging, yet fundamental, shift in how philanthropy is done. The PhiLab hopes that by sharing these productive ideas and examples, the practices will spread and influence new philanthropic organizing as well as transformations within existing philanthropic institutions. In doing so, the contributions in this publication deliberately complicate the all-too-common monolithic understanding of philanthropy by illuminating the heterogeneity of actors in the sector, the complexity of interactions between these actors, and the diversity of perspectives and practices contained within the philanthropic ecosystem.
